President Sirleaf Thanks Staff of Permanent Mission, Consulate General for Outstanding Services

The Inquirer newspaper quotes a Foreign Ministry release: President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has thanked the staff of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Liberia to the United Nations and the Consulate General of the Republic of Liberian in New York for the outstanding services rendered the Liberian Government, which she said is owed to the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who continue to enable government meet all its commitments. The Liberian leader also used the occasion to officially open the new offices of the Permanent Mission and Consulate General which recently relocated to 228 East 45^th Street, between 2^nd and 3^rd Avenues in New York.  “How pleased I am to be in your new premises that gives a lot more space and thereby encourages you to work harder, put in more effort, strength and commitment in the performance of your tasks,” the Liberian leader said. According to a dispatch from New York, President Sirleaf made the assertion when the staff of both the Permanent Mission and the Consulate General presented her a plague, a bouquet of flowers and a cake in appreciation for the quality of leadership and the service she has rendered and continues to render to the country.Liberia’s Consul-General to New York, Mr. Rudolph E. Sherman, Jr., presenting the plague on behalf of his colleagues, said it was in appreciation of Madam President’s dedicated service and transformative leadership. The Minister Counselor at the Permanent Mission, Ms. Gail Farngalo, presenting the bouquet of flowers said, “The staff value and appreciate you and your leadership and legacy. May you strive in your future endeavors.” Foreign Minister, Ms. Marjon Kamara, on behalf of the Permanent Mission and Consulate General, said gifts including the cake presented to Madam President were another manifestation of their appreciation and esteem with which the staff hold her; adding, “receive them in the spirit for which it is given,” she said.

Liberia/USA sign GLOBE agreement

The United States or U.S. Embassy here on Monday, on behalf of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education to implement the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program in Liberia. The program will be piloted this year by Peace Corps Volunteers in 10 public high schools in eight rural counties. Liberia will be the 118th country to join the GLOBE program. Launched in 1995, this international science and education program provides students with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, and to contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the earth’s ecosystem. The goal of this program in Liberia is to encourage more students to explore and pursue studies and careers in science, technology, math and engineering fields. This worldwide initiative to make earth science practical and fun for students is also providing NASA with data they use to calibrate satellites, verify their own readings and provide more detailed information about local environmental conditions. GLOBE connects students, teachers, scientists, and citizens from different parts of the world to conduct real, hands-on science about their local environment and put in a global perspective, writes the New Dawn newspaper.

Imam Krayee Wants Politicians be Truthful As Liberia Marks International Day of Peace. 

The Chief Imam of Liberia, Ali Krayee, has called on Liberian politicians to be truthful to their word as they go about campaigning during these elections. Imam Krayee said, the administration of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf might have had its own pitfalls but it has largely ensured that Liberia remains on the path of peace and development. He said for anyone to think that the government of Liberia has done nothing would suggests that over  12 years of peace Liberians have enjoyed over the years means nothing to them, reports FrontPage Africa newspaper.

H’Rights Commission Reminds Political Parties…Wants Weekend Violence Investigated

According to the Inquirer newspaper, the Board of Commissioners of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) is calling on the Liberia National Elections Commission to launch a speedy investigation into the two incidents of violence which took place over the weekend as they require appropriate actions against violators a deterrence. The INCHR Board of Commissioners whose mandate is to remind all political parties about their commitment and responsibility laid out in the Farmington and Ganta Declarations has in the strongest term denounced the weekend violence terming them as unfortunate and bewildering for supporters of institutions and individuals seeking the helm of authority to engat in hooliganism and barbarism.

FIFA Officials Due In Liberia To Discuss New Programs

A two-member FIFA Delegation arrives in Liberia today to discuss new programs of the world governing body with the Liberia Football Association. The delegation, which is headed by Mr. Luca Piazza, Director of Reforms Implementation, includes Daniel O’Tool, Financial Governance Manager at the FIFA Development Division. According to a release from the LFA, the delegation will present FIFA Vision 2.0 program and the FIFA reforms, reports the Inquirer newspaper.  

Over 200,000 Liberians Affected With Cataract…Lions Clubs Int’l Executive Discloses 

An Executive of the Lion Clubs International Foundation visiting the Lions Clubs of Liberia has disclosed that over Two Hundred thousand (200,000) Liberians are affected with cataract, but she was quick to point out that efforts have been made at least to reduce the disease in the country. Madam Karen F. Kilberg who is the Regional Program Specialist of the Sight Programs Department of the Lions Clubs International Foundation said in an effort to providing an assistance to Liberians affected with the sickness, two projects have been undertaken by the Lions Club of Liberia. She said, the projects are located in Montserrado County, especially in Monrovia and Grand Bassa County in the Port city of Buchanan, pointing to the establishment of an eye care services to the affected persons in these counties, pens the Inquirer newspaper.

Chief Justice Warns Land Dealers

The Chief Justice of Liberia, Francis Korkpor, has warned land dealers in Sanniquellie City, Nimba County to keep distance from the premises of the newly constructed 8^th Judiciary Circuit Court in that city. The newly constructed modern court house is situated on two acres of land, with one acre of said land already fenced while the remaining one acre is yet to be fenced; but the Chief Justice warned, “We do not want anybody trespassing and if anybody has claim on this piece of land take us to court.” Double sale of lands is a common practice in the six political districts in six of the cities in Nimba County and as a result, land dispute continues to be on the rise at the  Magisterial Courts, reports the Inquirer newspaper.
