Liberia and the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal have established formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.

A dispatch from Liberia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations says a joint communique, guided by the principles of the United Nations Charter and the desire by both countries to promote mutual understanding and strengthen friendship and cooperation, was signed between Liberia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency Ambassador Lewis Garseedah Brown, II, who signed on behalf of the Liberian Government; while His Excellency Ambassador Durga Prasad Bhattarai signed on behalf of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

The ceremony took place at Liberia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations on Friday, August 18, 2017.

In remarks, Ambassador Brown described the signing ceremony as a new journey between the two countries that will deepen the bonds of cooperation and mutual exchanges in several sectors including education and tourism.

He used the occasion to thank the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal for its contribution to the United Nations Mission in Liberia and conveyed President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's sympathy to the people of Nepal for the loss of lives because of recent flooding in that country.

For his part, Ambassador Bhattarai said the signing ceremony was historic for his country as it brings to completion, the establishment of diplomatic ties between Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal and all founding members of the United Nations.

Nepalese Ambassador Bhattarai said the establishment of diplomatic ties present an opportunity for both countries to share experiences and consider the possibilities of bilateral cooperation and was hopeful that consultations for possible cooperation in the tourism and governance sectors could be held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries.

At the level of the United Nations, Ambassador Bhattarai committed to work in solidarity with Liberia on topical issues such as climate change to ensure that developing countries have a say in decisions that affect them.
