President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has sent a Congratulatory Message to the Governor-General of Canada, The Right Honorable David Johnston, on that country’s 150th Independence Anniversary on July 1, 2017.

Canada Day is celebrated on July 1^st, the official Independence Day of Canada. The day commemorates the founding of the Canadian federal government by the British North America Act of July 1, 1867. As the Independence Day of Canada, this day is observed as a national holiday throughout the country. Prior to 1982, Canada Day was known as Dominion Day and Confederation Day. The name was changed to Canada Day on October 27, 1982 by an act of parliament. This day of national importance celebrates the union of the British colonies of the Upper and Lower Canada into a single dominion under the name of Canada on July 1^st, 1867.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, President Sirleaf, on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia and in her own name, extended heartfelt felicitations and best wishes to The Right Honorable Johnston, and through him the Government and people of Canada, on the auspicious occasion of the sesquicentennial anniversary of that country.

The Liberian president said, “As you celebrate this milestone, you can be assured of the appreciation of the people of Liberia for the historic bonds of cooperation and friendship subsisting between our two countries and peoples, which was manifested in the historic visit of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in November 2016, which presented the opportunity for exchanges on efforts to further deepen future bilateral ties in many spheres.”

She than prayed that the people of Canada will continue to enjoy prosperity and the blessings of peace and national unity.
