The FAO Representative to Liberia Ms. Mariztou Njie Wednesday January 16 paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Gbehzohngar Milton Findley at The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Capitol Hill.

During their meeting, the two officials held fruitful bilateral discussions surrounding Liberia’s request to the FAO.

During the courtesy visit, Foreign Minister Findley reemphasized that the administration of President George Manneh Weah is deeply concerned about the quality of food being consumed by Liberians; something he said has prompted the country’s request to the FAO for assistance in the area of food security including rice production.  

Minister Findley said the Liberian Government is making efforts to ensure that Liberians consume quality food and safe drinking water so as to make them healthy at all-time.  

According to him, this is one of the top priorities of the CDC-led government. He noted that Liberia has pleaded with the FAO to intervene in the area of food production and security. .

The Liberian Foreign Minister told Ms. Njie that the government specially looks forward to the FAO for support in quality rice production.

Speaking at the meeting, FAO Representative Ms. Mariztou Njie said after the request by the Liberian Government, the FAO initiated talks with the Ministries of Agriculture and Commerce and Industries aimed at addressing Liberia’s food security concern.

Madam Njie said the FAO is currently engaging relevant government authorities to seek first-hand information concerning the situation so as to know what kind of intervention her organization can make in the areas of food security.

The Government of Liberian recently made a request to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to assist the country in ensuring that fruits and food imported or produced in Liberia are safe for human consumption as well as to assist the country in the production of the nation’s staple food (rice).
