
Foreign Minister Nyanti Congratulates President Boakai on Liberia’s Election to UN Security Council Non-Permanent Seat
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti, has extended heartfelt congratulations to the President of the Republic of Liberia and Chief Architect of Liberia’s foreign policy, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Liberia’s historic election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term. This landmark achievement was confirmed on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, following a decisive vote by the UN General Assembly. Liberia secured 181 out of 187 votes.
Speaking shortly after the announcement in the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia, Foreign Minister Nyanti hailed Liberia’s election as a moment of national pride and a testament to President Boakai’s visionary leadership, steadfast commitment to peace, and unwavering dedication to multilateral diplomacy. “This victory is not only a diplomatic milestone for Liberia but also a reflection of President Boakai’s tireless efforts to reposition Liberia as a responsible and respected member of the international community,” Foreign Minister Nyanti said. “Under his leadership, our country has renewed its commitment to global peace and security, and this election affirms the world’s trust in Liberia’s voice on matters of international significance.”
Liberia’s election to the Security Council marks a significant return to a high-profile global platform, where the country will contribute meaningfully to debates and decisions affecting international peace and security. The last time Liberia held a seat on the Council was during the 1961–1962 term. Foreign Minister Nyanti expressed deep appreciation to the senior management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their the Council exceptional work throughout the campaign. She credited their dedication, professionalism, and strategic engagement with member states as instrumental in securing Liberia’s successful bid. “To the hardworking team at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I extend my profound gratitude. Your diplomatic finesse, relentless advocacy, and commitment to our nation’s interests have played a crucial role in this achievement,” she said. “This is a proud day for all Liberians, and your efforts behind the scenes have made it possible.”
The Minister also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Deputy Minister Cllr. Deweh E. Gray; Deputy Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration, Dr. Ibrahim Nyei; Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lewis Brown; as well as all Deputy and Assistant Ministers, the Campaign Committee, Former Foreign Ministers, and the leadership of both the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate for their steadfast support throughout the campaign process. Looking ahead, Foreign Minister Nyanti stated that Liberia’s tenure on the Council will focus on key areas aligned with national priorities and historical experiences, including peacebuilding, conflict prevention, climate security, and the empowerment of women and youth in peace processes. She concluded with a call for unity and national support as Liberia prepares to assume its seat in January 2026, pledging that the country will serve with integrity, principle, and a strong commitment to global peace.
