President Sirleaf Declares January 22, 2018, ‘Inauguration Day’; To Be Observed as a Public Holiday throughout the Republic
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has by proclamation declared Monday, January 22, 2018 as “INAUGURATION DAY” and it’s to be observed throughout the Republic as a Public Holiday.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, the outgoing Liberian leader has also called upon all citizens, and all foreign residents within our borders to observe the Day as such and directs that all Government offices and business houses be closed on this Day from Six O’clock ante meridian to six O’clock post meridian.
Since 1944 Liberia has not witnessed a peaceful and democratic transition, which makes the impending inauguration a historic turning point in the nation’s history as one democratically elected Government will be handing power to another democratically elected Government
The proclamation notes that the citizens and residents of the Republic of Liberia wish to celebrate this momentous event and appreciate the infinite goodness and mercy of the Almighty who has blessed and prospered the work of the mind, hearts and hands of all the people of the Republic of Liberia.
The proclamation disclosed that the 54th Legislature has issued a Joint Resolution declaring the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex as the official venue for the Inauguration to be held on January 22, 2018.
Article 50 of the 1986 Constitution provides that the President shall be elected by universal adult suffrage of registered voters in the Republic, and shall hold office for a term of six years commencing at noon on the third working Monday.
Elections were held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, followed by a runoff on Tuesday December 26, 2017, which elections were declared by the International Observers to have been free, fair and transparent and in which Senators George Manneh Weah and Jewel Howard-Taylor were declared President-elect and Vice President-elect, respectively.
