President Sirleaf Proclaims Monday, October 24, ‘United Nations Day’
The President of the Republic of Liberia, Her Excellency Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has by Proclamation declared Monday, October 24, 2016, as United Nations Day, and is to be observed throughout the Republic as a Working Holiday.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, the observance is in recognition of the invaluable contributions of the United Nations to humanity.
The Proclamation calls upon all national and international organizations, United Nations Agencies near Monrovia, schools and other institutions of learning as well as citizens in general to cooperate with the Ministry of Education in organizing appropriate programs befitting the occasion.
The Proclamation is in consonance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2782, which was adopted in 1971 declaring October 24 of each year as United Nations Day to be celebrated internationally as a public holiday by all member states of the UN.
According to the Proclamation, Liberia will join other member states in celebrating this year’s Anniversary of the United Nations Day under the theme, “71st For 17”, which recognizes the achievements of the organization over its 71 years of existence and its commitment toward the realization of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The Proclamation further added that Liberia as a Founding Member and Signatory to the Charter of the United Nations, meaningfully benefits therefrom and continues to support all programs of the United Nations as an expression of its commitment to the objectives of the organization, particularly the intervention of UNMIL for the restoration of peace and security in Liberia, and its commitment to Liberia’s post-war socio-economic development.
The Presidential Proclamation also praised the world body for continually upholding its noble mission of maintaining international peace and security throughout its 71 years of existence, thus ensuring a secured world for successive generations.
The President’s Proclamation further recounted that in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly declared the 24 of October, the Anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, to be known to the People of the World as United Nations Day propagating the aims and achievements of the United Nations Organization.
