President Weah Issues Proclamation Declaring Friday, September 21st “as International Day of Peace”
President George Mannah has by Proclamation declared Friday, September 21, 2018 as International Day of Peace to be celebrated throughout the Republic as a Working Holiday.
The Proclamation calls on citizens and foreign residents, Government ministries and autonomous agencies, the civil society organizations, private schools and colleges as well as places of worship to cease this moment and observe a ”minute of silence” at 12:00 noon ante meridian on that day.
The Proclamation is in consonance with the United Nation Resolution 55/282 adoptedby the 57th Session of the General Assembly declaring the 21st day of September of each year as International Day of Peace and expanding the observance to include a call for global ceasefire in situation of conflict and nonviolence throughout the world.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, the observance of the event focuses on global ceasefire in situation of conflict and violence aimed at enhancing the culture of peace and stability throughout the globe.
According to the Proclamation, the celebration of this year’s International Day of Peace will take place under the theme “Supporting the Right to Peace” which highlights the responsibility to provide the opportunity for prosperity, peace and partnership through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Foreign Ministry release also added that Liberia, as a signatory to the Charter establishing the United Nations on October 24, 1945 with the mandate to save future generations from the scourge of war and promoting peace, has benefited from the peacekeeping mission of the world body which has the necessary conditions for sustainable development and economic prosperity.
“The United Nations General Assembly in 1981 Proclaimed anInternational Day of Peaceto be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the idea of peace, both within and among all nations and people as well as to provide a global shared date for all humanity to commit to peace, above all differences, and to contribute to building a culture of peace,” the Proclamation further declared.
