The Governments of the Republic of Liberia and the Kingdom of Morocco have signed three separate bilateral agreements in the fields of Agriculture, Higher Education and Research as well as Health. The first official travel of His Excellency Ambassador De-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr. as Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Kingdom of Morocco following an official invitation from Morocco where he consummated agreements that opened new fields in agriculture, health and education as well as increased in the numbers of scholarship opportunities for Liberians.   

According to a Foreign Ministry release issued in Monrovia, the agreements were signed in Rabat, the Kingdom of Morocco, where Liberia’s Foreign Minister Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr. traveled for the purpose of holding talks aimed at consolidating relations between the two states.

The Liberia’s Foreign Minister signed on behalf of the Liberian Government while H. E. Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco signed for his Government.

The First Agreement, which is in the field of Agriculture, seeks to promote and facilitate corporation between the two countries in the areas of farm mechanization, animal health, sharing of experience in Agriculture Research, Technical Support for Agriculture Value Addition and Entrepreneurship skill developments-MSME.

Other areas of corporation under the agriculture agreements include, technical assistance in animal health and production, strengthening of Liberian agriculture input and output analysis, Agro Industry and other areas of common interest.

In the field of Higher Education and Scientific Research, both sides have agreed to consolidate the scientific and technological potentials of both parties to broaden the links between the scientific and technical communities of both countries, and to also promote scientific and technical corporation in areas of common interest.

In the field of health, the main areas of focus between the two countries will include: Maternal, Child and newborn health, Epidemiological Surveillance including the establishment of an Epidemic Alert and Response System, Human Resource Capacity Building, Disaster Management, Prevention and Control of Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases and Medical coverage between the both nations.

During the signing ceremony between the two Governments, Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr. described as key and pivotal the Agriculture agreement, which he said, is in line with the vision of H.E. President George Manneh Weah to ensure that the Liberian economy becomes vibrant and competitive in the region.

Regarding the agreement in the Field of Health, Minister Kemayah said it is a strategic endeavor that fosters the country’s development agenda by having a healthy population.

While commenting on the agreement signed in the field of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Minister Kemayah said Education is key to nation building and as such, the Government of Liberia is delighted to have signed an MOU in said direction.

Speaking earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco H.E. Mr. Nasser Bourita said his Government has, among other things, agreed to increase the number of scholarship for Liberians and to also further boost economic corporation with her Liberian counterpart.

Minister Bourita said the visit of Liberia’s Foreign Minister to Morocco speaks to the level of corporation and friendship that have subsisted between Liberia and Morocco, adding that the relations between the two governments remain fruitful and rewarding.

“Your visit today will open a new chapter in our bilateral relations and we will make the necessary follow ups to the agreements and the actions that we have identified”, the Moroccan Foreign Minister stressed to his Liberian counterpart.

Meanwhile, both parties have agreed to establish Liberia-Morocco Joint Technical Committee, to be Co-Chaired by the competent authorities, which shall be responsible for the implementation and monitoring of specific corporation programs under the MOU.

The three agreements signed bring to total of twelve agreements that have been signed between the Governments of Liberia and the Kingdom of Morocco.
