AFL Urged To Go Into Business, Diversify To Create Wealth

The Daily Observer reports that the Security Advisor to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Dr. H. Boima Fahnbulleh, has said the budgetary allotment for the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) should be increased so that soldiers are motivated to effectively discharge their duties. He was speaking Tuesday at this year’s Armed Forces Day Symposium, which brought together several panelists at the Monrovia City Hall to discuss the theme, “AFL Contributions to Peace, Stability and Development.” The army, he said, must be innovative to go into business and diversify its activities to produce wealth so as to provide benefits for its active and retired personnel. He said the army needs to be equipped, trained and deployed all over the country to protect Liberia’s territory, secure the resources and create an enabling environment for development to take place

Police Ticketing Raises L$425k, US$4.5k In January

The Deputy Spokesman of the Liberia National Police (LNP) has disclosed that the traffic Ticketing section of the LNP in January 2017 generated LS425,150 and US$4,479 from the issuance of ticket for traffic violations. He said the amount which was raised throughout the country has been deposited into government revenue, reports the Heritage newspaper.

Liberia has 14 Trained Fistula Doctors

Dr. John Mulbah, head of Liberia’s Fistula Project (LFP), has disclosed that there are 14 fistula trained doctors in the country to fight the sickness. He said those doctors are deployed in various health facilities across the country, including the Phebe Hospital in Bong County, and the Family Medical Center in Montserrado County, respectively. He stressed the need to add fistula management in the curriculum for fistula doctors, adding that the fistula project is there to build the capacity of survivors and make them to be able to face their community and society at large. Dr. Mulbah detailed that the fistula project covers three phases: prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, the New Dawn newspaper reports.

Gov’t Takes Step to Prevent Sea Erosion

TheINQUIRER newspaper reads that The Government of Liberia has taken a major step to prevent sea erosion from destroying the D. Tweh Memorial High School in the Borough of New Kru Town on Bushrod Island. The administration of the D. Tweh Memorial High School told the local daily that the Government of Liberia, over the past two weeks brought boulders to help prevent the sea from eroding and destroying the D. Tweh School. According to the school administration, the Government of Liberia will start the project today.

2 More Parties Certificated

Two political parties were Tuesday accredited by the National Elections Commission in line with democratic provisions. The Chairman of the Coalition for Liberia’s Progress (CLP), Amos Tobor, Jr. and Chairman of the Change Democratic Action (CDA), Augustine Nimely, were the recipients of the official certificates given by the Commission’s Chairman Jerome Korkoya at the James M. Fromayan conference Hall in Sinkor. Mr. Korkoya assured the parties’ representatives of their independence and rights which are intertwined with accountability, the INQUIRER reports.

LADA, Afriland First Bank Sign MOU: Tangible Investments In Agri-Business 

According to the Daily Observer, USAID/LADA and Afriland First Bank (AFB) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to improve productivity through access to finance for organizations involved in agri-business. LADA (Liberia’s Agri-business Development Activity) strives to secure the nation’s food.  The MOU signed last Thursday in Monrovia by LADA’s Chief of Party Daniel Gies and Afriland First Bank’s CEO Hamadou O. Bayo defined the roles of both institutions. The MOU provides the framework for Feed the Future (FTF), LADA and AFB to solve unfolding constraints to enable agri-businesses easy access to finance and more appropriate loan products.

ELWA-Red-Light Road Project Bewams Hope on Radar as Pres. Sirleaf Engages BARDEA For US$15m to Facilitate Scheme

Discussions have been held to solicit support for the ELWA-Red-Light Road project which needs a cash injection estimated at US$15 million to begin the scheme. This was disclosed when President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf briefed Cabinet on her meeting with the Arab Bank for Reconstruction and Development (BARDEA) on the margins of the just ended AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  According to an Executive Mansion release, the Liberian leader said she discussed support for the financing of the ELWA-Red-Light road estimated at US$15 million; the establishment of a Center of Excellence; and a US$15m facility to be managed by LBDI aimed at supporting Small and Medium Scale Businesses, the FOCUS newspaper says.

President Sirleaf Eyes Turning Solid Wastes Into Energy

The FOCUS newspaper reads that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has stressed the need for initiatives that invest in turning solid waste into energy in the nation’s capital, Monrovia. She also spoke of the need for additional cleaning up of the city and improving the issue of water and sewer, among others. President Sirleaf was speaking when she received in audience Mr. William Cobbett, Director of Cities Alliance and Mr. Steven Weir, Vice President, Global Program Development for Habitat for Humanity.
