President Weah Issues Proclamation Declaring Saturday, July 6th “International Cooperative Day”; - Admonishes Liberians to Join In Observance

The President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah has by Proclamation declared Saturday, July 6, 2019 as “International Cooperative Day” and is to be observed throughout the Republic as a Working Holiday.

 

The Proclamation is in consonance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution which setting aside the first Saturday of July of each year to be observed as “International Day of Cooperative” marking the centenary of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).    

 

The Proclamation calls on government Ministries and agencies, Labor Unions, civil society organization, students, youth and women groups to join the Cooperative Development Agency to initiate and execute appropriate programs befitting the observance of the day.

 

According to a Foreign Ministry Release, the objective of the event is to increase awareness about cooperatives at the national level as well as to strengthen and extend partnerships between the International Cooperatives Movement, governments and other supporting organizations.

 

The Proclamation further recalls that the cooperatives have continued to play important roles in economic and social development which are vital to create new ethics and sustain values in business and cultural developments.  

 

“Liberia, being one of the funding members and signatories of the Charter of the United Nations, will join member countries to commemorate the Day under the theme: “COOPS 4 DECANT WORK,” the Proclamation declares.
