Pres. Sirleaf Dedicates US$8M Water Treatment Plant… AfDB Country Manager Reaffirms Bank’s Support 

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Wednesday dedicated the newly rehabilitated Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation’s (LWSC) White Plains Water Treatment Plant located in Harrisburg, Montserrado County. Rehabilitation of the plant was financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) at a cost of US$8.6 million. The plant will augment the supply of water to Monrovia and its environs with 8 to 16 million gallons per day. The President said at the dedication that prior to extensive rehabilitation work, every facet of the water facility was affected by structural damage which caused mud to consume the water filters meant to clean and purify the water before channeling it to consumers, reports the Daily Observer.

President Sirleaf Dedicates Zone 6 Base Police Station

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, dedicated the newly constructed Zone 6 Base Police Station in Brewerville City outside Monrovia. She commended authorities of the partnership between the Liberia National Police (LNP) and community members. The Liberian leader said the construction of the Zone 6 Base Police station is an example of good cooperation between the citizens of Brewerville and the Liberia National Police. She lauded the donation of the land on which the facility has been constructed adding: “What we are witnessing here today is an example of good partnership and cooperation between the community and the Liberia National Police, asserts the In Profile Daily.

VP Boakai Donates Fire Truck, Medical Supplies

According to the Daily Observer, despite losing the 2017 Presidential run-off to Senator George Weah of the CDC, Vice President Joseph N. Boakai fulfilled his promise to citizens of voinjama when he donated several items including a fire service truck, medical supplies, and sporting materials. According to him, the donation was part of his promise made to the citizens to protect lives and properties since the city had no fire service truck to respond to fire incidents in Voinjama and surrounding communities. The donation came from the City of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota (USA), which has sister-city relations with Voinjama. “This donation came from friends in Brooklyn Park City in the USA as a sign of sealing a sisterly relationship between the two cities and efforts through his work to save lives and properties,” VP Boakai said. He explained that improving the living conditions of his citizens remains critical on his agenda and he will continue to work to promote Lofa County and the country at large.  

Liberia To Host High Level Panel On Migration 

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will host and chair the inaugural meeting of the High Level Panel on Migration (HLPM) in Monrovia on January. The Panel on Migration was established at the Ninth Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration and the Economic Commission for Africa Conference of African Ministries of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, which took place in Addis Ababa in April 2016. The overall objective of the Panel is to affirm Africa’s commitment to global objectives and values on migration, and harness migration for Africa’s development in the context of international cooperation. The Panel is composed of fifteen eminent persons, all appointed in their own capacity and includes representatives of government, the private sector, academia and civil society. Members are drawn from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, pens the Daily Observer.  

House Adjourns, Shelving Ellen’s Last-minute Bills…Transitional Turning Over Program Set For Monday 

According to the Daily Observer, the House of Representatives has finally adjourned the 53^rd Legislature and leaves behind the much-unfinished business, including all the listed bills of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, which she described as “drat bills of vital importance to the economy and revenue generation.” Thursday’s session was adjourned after a motion was tendered by Lofa Country District #3 Representative Clarence Massaquoi when the agenda was read, which had a single item – adjournment. 37 Representative, who were present, according to the record of the Chief Clerk Mildred Sayon, said yea, to support the motion. “We hereby adjourn to meet on Monday, January 15, to attend to the transitional ceremony of the 53^rd Legislature to the 54^th Legislature to the 54^th Legislature,” Speaker said as he knocked the gavel.

Job Scam Busted…Nine Persons Arrested at CDC Headquarters for Allegedly Collecting Money for Fake Jobs

According to the FrontPage Africa newspaper, the headquarters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 was in a mixture of angry and jubilant mood after over nine persons were arrested for lunching a fake job scheme in the name of the party. The suspects were apprehended by the CDC intelligence and turned over to the Liberia National Police for investigation. They were arrested after they have sold forms in various communities across Monrovia, claiming that the process was party of a job scheme sanctioned by the party.  

Cummings Impacts Education…Presents US$25,000.00 To Science & Technology School 

Liberia elections are over, but former presidential candidate Alexander B. Cummings says, he remains impactful in improving the country’s educational sector. Cummings said when more investment is done in the educational sector, Liberia would take its rightful place among the comity of nations and help strengthen its future. Speaking Thursday at program marking Quarter One Report Program of the Alexander B. Cummings Model Science and Technology School in Duport Road, Paynesville, the Alternative National Congress political leader said there is need to tap upon the potentials of Liberians students with talents. Congratulating students for their zest towards education, the former Liberian Presidential hopeful commended teachers at the school for their commitment to support the school, reports the FrontPage Africa newspaper.

100 Teachers Trained For Vocational Program

Authorities at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Have begun training the at least 100 teachers in for its vocational and technical programs in Monrovia. The 10-day training, with support from the United Nations Education and Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) through the ministry, began on Monday and is expected to end early next week. Over the years one of the biggest problem the country has been facing is the lack of trained teachers in the vocational and technical areas. The training is the first of its kind that will lay the basis for much stronger involvement in the Technical Vocation Education Training (TVET) sector. There has been no training center with the exception of the Kakata Rural Teachers Training Institute KRTTI, for the regular teachers, writes the Daily Observer.
