President Sirleaf Issues National Reading Week Proclamation

The President of the Republic of Liberia, Her Excellency Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has declared Monday, September 9th through 14th of September 2013 as National Reading Week and calls on all school authorities to observe same within the territorial limits of Liberia. 

The Proclamation issued to this effect states this year’s National Reading Week   runs from the 9 through the 14 of September 2013 and   will be celebrated under the theme “READING BRIGHTENS YOUR LIFE”.

The Proclamation directs and calls on local officials of government, educators, NGOS, corporations, and principals of schools, teachers and students as well as the Liberian citizenry to join the Ministry of Education in supporting the programs and activities intended to help young people to acquire the requisite kills of reading.

A Foreign Ministry release says as a demonstration of its support to reading, the Ministry of Education launched the National Reading Campaign to inspire principals, teachers and the community leaders to ensure that the Liberian children not only learn to read but also begin to love reading.

The Proclamation also states that there is unlimited access to information and the ability to read and comprehend the written materials proves to be the key to any development efforts. 

According to the Proclamation, improving the reading skills of Liberians will pave the way for the country to become an informed society and by investing in its future leaders.

It says reading is a skill which Liberian children of all ages ought to acquire in order to develop a solid and successful foundation throughout their early education and beyond

The release observes that the pleasure that comes from reading usually encourages people to practice and improve their lives through the programs established by the Ministry of Education in Liberia.
