President Weah Declares Wednesday, December 9, 2020 as International Anti-Corruption Day To Be Celebrated Wednesday, December 2, 2020
The President of the Republic of Liberia, H.E. Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah has issued a Proclamation declaring Wednesday, December 9, 2020 as “International Anti-Corruption Day”, to be observed on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 throughout the Republic as a Working Holiday.
The Proclamation calls on all Ministries, Agencies, Local and International Organizations, United Nations Organs in Liberia and the General Public to join the Liberian Anti-Corruption Commission in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations and the National Integrity Forum, to plan and implement appropriate programs befitting the occasion.
According to the Proclamation, this year marks the 11th commemoration of the International Anti-Corruption Day campaign in Liberia.
The day will be celebrated on December 2, 2020 at the Corina Hotel in Sinkor, Monrovia under the theme: “REDUCING CORRUPTION IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR AS A DRIVE TO ENHANCING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND GOOD GOVERNANCE”.
A Foreign Ministry release says the General Assembly of the United Nations on October 31, 2003, unanimously designated December 9TH of each year as “International Anti-Corruption Day” when it adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
The release says the significance of the observance of the observance of the International Corruption Day is to raise awareness about corruption and promote anti-corruption campaign activities, including the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in combating and preventing it.
According to the Proclamation, the Launch of the International Anti-Corruption Day, will begin with an in-door program at the Corina Hotel on December 2, 2020 to bring together the business community, business college students from various universities, members of the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, Liberia Custom Brookers Association and a wide range of civil society actors, as well as other strategic partners aimed at promoting the fight against corruption in both the public and private sectors.
In August 2008, the Government of the Republic of Liberia established the Liberian Anti-Corruption Commission through an act of the Legislature and further developed a Policy framework and a Comprehensive Strategy that outlines the preventive, educational and enforcement measures to combat Corruption throughout Liberia, the release says.
Corruption in both the public and private sectors of a nation undermines the national and international framework of good governance which seeks to promote economic development, the Proclamation further asserts.
