President Sirleaf Congratulates the Republic of Ukraine On 26th Independence Anniversary, August 24, 2017

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has sent a Congratulatory Message to her colleague, the President of the Republic of Ukraine, His Excellency Mr. Petro Poroshenko, on that country’s 26th Independence Anniversary on August 24, 2017.

Ukraine’s Independence Day is annually celebrated on August 24 to mark the anniversary of the country’s declaration of independence in 1991. Prior to 1991, Ukraine was a constituent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.). On August 24, 1991, after a failed coup in Moscow, Ukraine declared its independence. About 90 percent of Ukrainians voted for their country’s independence following this declaration, on December 1, 1991.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, President Sirleaf, on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia, and in her own name, extended best wishes to His Excellency Mr. Petro Poroshenko, and through him, to the Government and people of the Republic of Ukraine, on his country’s 26th Independence Anniversary.

She also wished them continued happiness and prosperity as they celebrate their country’s Declaration of Independence on August 24, 2017.

“We note with admiration the determination and fortitude of the people of Ukraine in building a strong and productive country especially following years of independence,” President Sirleaf said, adding that in the context of both countries bilateral engagements, her government is encouraged by the healthy relationship subsisting between the two countries and peoples to which they have committed to intensifying for mutual benefits.

“I am pleased that our relations were further heightened when I received credentials of the Ukrainian Ambassador accredited to Liberia, H.E. Oleksandr Ovcharov in July 2017,” President Sirleaf stressed, noting that she is confident of both nations’ commitment to expand the relationship encompassing various spheres, including the economic growth and development of both Liberia and Ukraine.

She, again, congratulated President Poroshenko and the people of Ukraine on their national day, and wished that they will experience renewed peace and prosperity.
