President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has extended her sincere best wishes to His Excellency Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, on the occasion marking the German Unity Day.

The Day of German Unity is the national day of Germany, celebrated on 3 October as a public holiday. It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990, when the goal of a United Germany that originated in the middle of the 19th century, was fulfilled again. Therefore, the name addresses neither the re-union nor the union, but the unity of Germany. The Day of German Unity has been German national holiday since 1990, when the reunification was formally completed.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, President Sirleaf  on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia, and in her own name, extended sincere best wishes, to the German leader,  and through you, to the Government and people of Germany, as the celebrate this historic milestone, ”the German Unity Day”.

She further stated that as the people of Germany celebrate their Unity Day, Liberia reflects 27 years ago, when the world received the thrilled news of the reunification of Germany after several decades of painful artificial separation.

“It was a deeply moving moment for the people of Liberia also, as we recollect the close bond of friendship Liberia had with the then West Germany. Ever since then, as a united Germany, relations between our two nations and peoples continue to flourish, especially as we endeavor to collectively enhance world peace and security,” the Liberian Leader recalled.

President Johnson Sirleaf also hoped with Liberia and Germany working together, they will be able to explore new frontiers for cooperation, mainly in the private sector, for the mutual benefits of their two countries within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.

President Johnson Sirleaf then wished for the personal wellbeing of President Steinmeier and for the Government and people of Germany, peace, unity, and prosperity in the years ahead.
