President Sirleaf Congratulates Colombia on 206th Independence Anniversary

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has sent a message of congratulations to the Government and people of Colombia on the occasion marking their 206th Independence Anniversary.

On July 20, 1810, Colombian patriots stirred the population of Bogotá into street protests against Spanish rule. The Viceroy, under pressure, was forced to agree to allow for a limited independence which later became permanent. Today, July 20 is celebrated in Colombia as Independence Day.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, in the message to His Excellency Juan Manuel Santos Calderon, President of the Republic of Colombia, President Sirleaf, on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia and in her own name, extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to President Calderon, the Government and people of Colombia on the occasion of the Independence Anniversary of their great country.

The Liberian leader said while Colombia commemorates this day, the people of Liberia are appreciative of the efforts to deepen the cordial ties of friendship as was manifested by the accreditation of Colombia’s Ambassador to Liberia which was reinforced by Colombia’s request to designate an Honorary Consul.

“We welcome the bilateral ceasefire recently signed, which we hope will translate into lasting peace for your country and its people,” President Sirleaf said, adding that the Government of Liberia will continue to work closely with the Government and people of Colombia for the realization of mutual benefits in the interest of their two peoples.

The Liberian leader prayed that on this auspicious occasion, God will continue to endow President Calderon with wisdom, good health, and happiness as he leads the industrious people of Colombia to a prosperous future. She also prayed that the people of Colombia will have sustained peace, national unity and enduring prosperity.
