Chinese Ambassador Pays Courtesy Call on Liberia’s New Foreign Minister; Promises To Deepen Ties with Liberia

Foreign Minister, Amb. Marjon V. Kamara, has lauded the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for the numerous bilateral and technical assistance it continues to render the Government and people of Liberia.

 

She particularly expressed gratitude to China for the bilateral scholarships it has provided to enhance the capacity building of Liberians. She also thanked the Chinese for the recent donation of military equipment and supplies for use by the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL).

 

According to a Foreign Ministry release, Ms. Kamara made the assertions when the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency Zhang Yue, paid her a courtesy call at her Foreign Ministry offices recently. 

 

Foreign Minister Kamara further expressed confidence that the traditional and bilateral friendship subsisting between the two countries will be further strengthened to enhance the mutual benefits of their peoples, adding, “I am confident that our two countries can support each other.” 

 

She assured the Chinese diplomat that Liberia is appreciative of his Government’s support. “We are very grateful to China especially when the country is at the critical stage in the phase of UNMIL’s transition.”

 

Foreign Minister Kamara indicated that as UNMIL concludes its transition in Liberia, she looks forward to seeing China play the same role it had played before the UN Mission drawdown.

 

She urged collaboration between Liberian and Chinese businesses through partnership at “the people to people” level as well as at the managerial level.

 

Earlier, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yue congratulated Foreign Minister Kamara on her preferment; adding, “I am very pleased since my tour of duty here, that Liberia and China has had very good working relations.”

 

The Chinese Envoy spoke of his country’s strategic role in promoting Liberia’s interest at the UN Security Council, recounting that China has always spoken out for Liberia especially when the issue of a UN Mission in Liberia was on the table for discussion.

 

He disclosed that Chinese investors are in high gear to come and invest in the Liberian economy. “They are encouraged to come and do something here, as investment in the private sector can create more employment opportunities for the citizens,” the Chinese diplomat emphasized.

 

Ambassador Yue indicated that China is fully aware of Liberia’s development needs especially in infrastructure – road connectivity - and urged the country to tap into the World Bank funded projects to meet some critical post-war development challenges including road construction across the country.       

 

The Chinese Envoy said China shares the same views with Liberia especially on the Sustainable Development Agenda with both nations working to promote each other interests.

 

He assured that China is and will always be Liberia’s reliable partner, hoping that its ties with Liberia will grow even stronger under the stewardship of Minister Marjon Kamara as Liberia’s Foreign Minister.

 

Touching on his Government’s recent donation to the AFL, Chinese Ambassador Yue stated that it is intended to enable Liberia build its defense system as the country strives to improve its security sector.

 

Commenting on the country’s health challenges, the Chinese diplomat said his country is interested in assisting Liberia improve its public health system through building what he referred to as “reference laboratories” at some public referral hospitals including the John F. Kennedy Medical Center and the Redemption Hospital in Monrovia. 

 

Chinese Ambassador Yue promised to work with Foreign Minister Kamara in implementing those projects that are already earmarked by the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China.
