DAILY NEWS SUMMARY FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2018

President George Manneh Weah’s visit to La Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, First Lady Clar Weah’s donation to Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), the training of 40 immigration personnel by Liberia Coast Guard and the erection of light poles in Caldwell are among the selected stories for today’s media summary.

 

Weah Begins Regional Tour

President George Manneh Weah has departed the country for Abidjan and Accra respectively on a four-day State visit beginning the 4th through 7th April, 2018.  The Liberian leader along with delegation arrives in Abidjan on April 4 and leaves for Accra, Ghana on the 6th for a day’s visit. While in Abidjan and Accra, President Weah is expected to meet his Ivorian and Ghanaian counterparts, H.E. Alassane Quattara of La Côte d’Ivoireand H.E. Nana Ado-Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana, to discuss strengthening of bilateral relationships that exist between Liberia and both countries. President Weah is also expected to use his visits to explore avenues for investments in an effort to enhance trade between Liberia and La Côte d’Ivoireon the one hand and Liberia and Ghana on the other. He will also discuss issues concerning the promotion of peace within the ECOWAS region as well as cross-border security issues affecting both Liberia and Ivory Coast. He is accompanied by Hon. Samuel D. Tweah, Minister of Finance, Hon. Varney Sirleaf, Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Eugene Nagbe, Minister of Information, Minister of Transport, Hon. Sam Wlue and Hon. Trokon Kpui, Minister of State Without Portfolio. Others are, Madam Nyemade Pearson, Managing Director of LPRC, Presidential Press Secretary, Sam Mannah, among others, reports the New Dawn newspaper.

“First Lady Weah Is A Partner In Progress” – Mayor Koijee

Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson Koijee commended the First Lady of the Republic of Liberia, Mrs. Clar Weah for her continued support to enhancing efforts aimed at keeping Monrovia Clean and safe. The Monrovia City Mayor was speaking at the Monrovia City Hall on Tuesday, April 3 when he received a huge consignment of face mask donated by First Lady Clar Weah. A press release from the office of the First Lady says the donation is intended to boost the operations of the MCC, pens the New Dawn newspaper.

Liberia Coast Guard to Train 40 Immigration Personnel

The Liberia Coast Guard (LCG) has accepted to train forty (40) Immigration Border Patrol Marine Units Officers of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) in the operation of Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB), beginning from May 1, 2018 to May 19, 2018 at the Liberian Coast Guard Base. The agreement for the training came about through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the LIS and the Ministry of National Defense / Armed Forces of Liberia made and entered into on April 4, 2018. Commissioner-General, Cllr. Lemuel E. A. Reeves, Sr., represented the LIS whilst Hon. Tibli O. Dickson, Sr represented the Ministry of National Defense/ Armed Forces of Liberia. It can be recalled that the LIS received a donation of six (6) Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats to build its operational capacity. The LIS, being desirous of training its designated personnel for the use of these boats, requested the Liberia Coast Guard to assist in conducting said training. According to the MOU, the LCG will offer the forty designated LIS officers two courses: Small Boat Operations and Outboard Motor Maintenance for the period of eighteen days. The LCG will also provide protective equipment, instructors, classroom, training labs, training materials and PPE, transport and storage of fuel for the Outboard Motors and lodging for the forty (40) course attendees at no cost, pens the FrontPage Africa newspaper.

Villagers Appeal To SRC Management

According to the New Dawn newspaper, villagers in the concession areas of the Salala Rubber Corporation are appealing to Management for construction of hand pumps, roads and employment opportunities for them. They also appealed for construction of additional facilities, including clinics, schools and provision of rice to their respective communities. They made the call recently in Gleegbah Town, Gibi District, Upper Margibi County diring the second quarterly cluster engagement meeting with members of local communities located in the concession areas of the Salala Rubber Corporation. The meeing, which was initiated by the management of the SRC is intended to directly engage local communities within the concession areas in order to garner closer relationship between both side. 

AFL To Clean Up Monrovia

 

The Armed Forces of Liberia is expected to take on the second face of the Weah for Clean City campaign this Saturday, April 7 around Monrovia. Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson Koijee told a press conference on Wednesday, April 4 that since the launch of the Weah for Clean City campaign, the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has been very supportive in the process. He said, they have been informed that Defense Minister Daniel Ziankahn through the goodwill of President George Manneh Weah has asked the Army to also make sure that the second face of this campaign be covered by the AFL, reports the New Dawn newspaper.

Liberian NGO Intensifies School Law and Justice Program For Students

In the wake of the United Nations Mission in Liberia’s (UNMIL) complete drawdown, the National Youth Movement for Transparent Elections (NAYMOTE) continues to intensify its School Law and Justice Program for high school and university students. During a seminar held at the Muslim Congress High School in Monrovia recently, NAYMOTE’s Program Assistant, Trokon Ernest Thompson, said the overall goal of the initiative is to improve students’ understanding of the legal process, access to justice, crime prevention, conflict resolution and build trust between the young people and law enforcement agencies. He noted that despite the gains made since the end of the civil war, there are still challenges with the weak justice system, high level of youth unemployment, land conflict, drugs and crimes and other vices, according to FrontPage Africa newspaper.

 

LEC Begins Erection of Network Poles In Caldwell

The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has begun erecting network poles in the Township of Caldwell for the electrication of about 33,000 households nationwide. Mr. Henry Kimber, Coordinator of the Caldwell Electrification Project, giving overview of the project, stated that the project, when launched, will connect and supply about 33,000 households, adding “we could go about 38,000 households. Kimber said that the project will cover both side of the road from Double Bridge to Freeport on the Somalia Drive, writes the Heritage newspaper.

 

Land Authority Receives US$89,000 Survey Equipment From UNDP

A critical function in land administration and management in Liberia is the establishment of a referencing system for land information data, which will provide the base information need for the National Land Information System (NLIS). The NLIS is the foundation of development of a national spatial data infrastructure to effectively manage land administration functions at national, subnational, regional and local levels and aid in sustainable development planning. As a first step towards this, the Liberia Land Authority (LLA) has created a new Survey Division. The Division is being supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with the procurement of modern equipment and appropriate tools to enable efficient delivery of land administration service, reports Inquirer newspaper.
