President Sirleaf Meets Wives Of Aggrieved Soldiers

The INSIGHT newspaper reports that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has met wives of aggrieved soldiers of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) in an effort to resolve outstanding problems surrounding the compulsory savings they claimed the Ministry of Defense owes them. She assured the aggrieved wives of AFL soldiers of government’s commitment in resolving their concerns. She said government will pay the money into the soldiers’ accounts over a period of time, noting: “I, as well as the President-elect have been briefed by the Chief of Staff of the AFL." she revealed.  According to an Executive Mansion release, President Sirleaf met the aggrieved wives of AFL soldiers on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at her Fish Market residence.  The In Profile Newspaper on the other hand quotes Defense Minister Brownie Samukai As saying that the Ministry of National Defense is responsible for the procedural lapses in the management, expenditure and utilization of AFL pension benefits. He says the Government of Liberia has determined that it is appropriate and the right thing to do is to restitute the full amount of US$1,147,656.35 deducted from the past several years. Minister Samukai said the Ministry should not have used the funds for the benefit of the soldiers without requisite. Reporting under the caption “Defense Ministry Admits Lapses-Defers AFL Benefits Payment To New Gov’t”, the Defense boss noted that said fund shall be immediately provided in the next budget appropriation of the AFL by the Government of Liberia.
