Vice President Howard-Taylor Meets Nigerian Counterpart; Stresses Youth Empowerment

(Abuja, April 23, 2018:)The Vice President of Liberia, Her Excellency Madam Jewel Howard-Taylor has held closed-door talks with the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

A press release from the Liberian Embassy in Abuja says the meeting between the two Vice Presidents was held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, April 23, 2018.

Liberia’s Ambassador to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Professor Al-Hassan Conteh, accompanied the Liberian Vice President and delegation to the Presidential Villa.

According to the release, Vice President Howard-Taylor, on behalf of the Liberian Government, thanked her Nigerian counterpart for his country’s warmth reception accorded President George Manneh Weah and entourage during his recent two-day state visit here.

“Whenever I go out I, on behalf of the Liberian Government, seek supports that will help the Liberian youths. That’s our contribution towards our Government’s ‘Pro-Poor Agenda’. That is my priority, helping President Weah in getting supports that will help provide empowerment for the youths, including skills training programs and agricultural programs”, she told Vice President Osinbajo.

“We need to put our less-engaged young people into vocational institutions, and reactive the various cooperative agricultural programs in the rural parts of Liberia where our young people will be fully engaged”, Vice President Howard-Taylor told her Nigerian counterpart.

She also informed the Nigerian Vice President of her conviction for women’s use of innovative technology to address challenges facing them.

The Liberian Vice President had earlier over the weekend told hundreds of women at an international women summit in Abuja to take advantage of technology which makes life easier to manage if people have access to it.

“Basically, I told the women of the need for us to re-orient our minds”, she told Vice President Osinbajo on Monday.

In response, Vice President Osinbajo thanked Vice President Howard-Taylor for paying him a courtesy visit.

He then applauded his Liberian counterpart’s desire to see young Liberians empowered. Vice President Osinbajo particularly pointed out agriculture as an important medium for youth empowerment.

Meanwhile, the Liberian Vice President over the weekend held fruitful discussions with Alhaji Bashir Lawal, a prominent Nigerian agriculturist.

Alhaji Lawal, during his meeting with the Vice President, expressed interest in helping to make Liberia realize its full agricultural potentials. He stated his willing to work with the Liberian Vice President towards achieving that national goal for the post-war country in its recovery and developmental agenda.
