Deputy Foreign Minister Fahnbulleh Among Ministers of Member States of ECOWAS deliberating on Antiterrorism initiatives in Burkinafaso

Deputy Liberia’s Foreign Minister Henry B. Fahnbulleh is currently participating in an ongoing ECOWAS Antiterrorism summit convened in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

 

A Foreign Ministry release quotes a communication from ECOWAS as saying; the ongoing Extraordinary Meeting in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso was organized by the Mediation and Security Council of the Economic Community of West African States to deliberate on the growing threats of terrorism in the region. 

 

According to the dispatch from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso the Mediation and Security Council of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is holding an Extraordinary Meeting in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to deliberate on the growing threats of terrorism in the sub-region.

 

The Council is meeting to reaffirm the determination of ECOWAS’ Member States to work collectively to prevent and strategize more efficient and effective way to combat terrorism, strengthen cooperation and coordination as well as to redefine priority areas for Member States.

 

Deputy Foreign Minister Fahnbulleh is among other Ministers of ECOWAS  making policy contribution to the instrument that would seek to address issues of terrorism in the West African region.     

 

Considering the growing threats of terrorism in the region, the Heads of States and Government of ECOWAS and ECCAS (Economic Community of Central African States) being conscious of the cross-border and trans-regional nature of the terrorism threat, convened a joint summit in Lomé, Togo on the 30th of July 2018.

 

“The Lomé Declaration on Peace, Security, Stability and the Fight against Terrorism and Violent Extremism” was adopted, after the meeting.  

 

Subsequently, the Heads of State of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo met in Accra, Ghana where they discussed developments in the security situation in the Region. They adopted a number of decisions among which is the call for an Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism, which was scheduled to be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on the 14th of September 2019.

 

The ongoing meeting by the Mediation and Security Council is in preparation of the Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Terrorism expected to take place on Saturday September 14,2019.
