Taking Full Advantage: Liberia Elected to UN Commission on International Trade

New York -  Liberia has been elected by acclamation on the membership of the United Nations Commission on International Trade  law (UNCITRAL), for a period of six years.


Liberia is expected to team up with other Member States elected on the Commission to effectively carry out its mandate which calls for the promotion,   harmonization and the unification of  the law of the international trade.


Speaking shortly after the election, Liberia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Her Excellency Ambassador Majorn Kamara said that it was a honor for Liberia to serve on such an important Commission, which according to her, has become very instrumental towards implementing is functions.


She said Liberia will take full  advantage of the best practices and  experiences  acquired from such  global interactions  to reinforce its domestic trade  in line with the existing law.


The  Commission on International Trade Law serves as a legal body with in the UN system and pursues its mandate through preparation of texts dealing with the sustentative law that governs trade sanctions  or other aspects of business  law that have  an impact on international trade. In addition, the Commission also under takes  a range of technical  assistance activities to promote the use and adoption of  the texts it has developed.


Furthermore,  the Commission endeavors in order to ensure "coordination of the work of organizations active in the  international trade law field  to encourage cooperation, avoid duplication of effort, and promote efficiency, consistency and coherence"
Meanwhile, other elected members  on the Commission  from Africa are, Sierra  Leone, Cote d'Ivoire , Zambia and Namibia.
