Women’s Protection Assured LNP To Provide Security For Female Aspirants  

The Inspector General of the Liberia National Police Gregory Coleman has assured women aspiring for legislative seats of full Police protection during their campaign process, ahead of the pending Presidential and Legislative Elections scheduled for October this year. The police IG Coleman said the Liberia National Police is under full obligation to provide an enabling environment that will encourage women participation in the pending elections, describing them as an important contributor to the current peace the country is experiencing. The FrontPage Africa newspaper quoting a LNP statement as says the Police chief admonished the women to be peaceful during the process of elections, adding that the upcoming election is very crucial to the survival of the country’s emerging democracy. The Liberian Police Chief made the statement over the weekend in Gbarnga, Bong County where he met with over one hundred women who are aspiring for legislative seats and their campaign managers.

ECOWAS Parliamentarians Visit Liberian Judiciary

The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Moustapha Cissé Lô, says counterfeit and expire drugs are serious public health issues that have multiple bearings on the lives of persons living in region. He pledged the body’s commitment in ensuring that the regions’ vision for 2020 that supports the rights to establishment, free movement, and the wellbeing of citizens is achieved by the end of the period. Speaking during a visit with member of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Speaker Lô said the visit of his delegation is based on the cardinal role the judiciary will play in the enforcement of regulations and decision reached by member countries, the FOCUS newspaper reads.

Immigration Confiscates Over 160 Voter Cards From Non-Liberians

The Liberia Immigration Service has confiscated and turned over to the National Elections Commission (NEC) about 161 voter registration cards confiscated from non-Liberians who participated in the just ended voter registration exercise. Making the disclosure in an interview with the Liberia New Agency (LINA) via mobile phone in Monrovia on Monday LIS Director of Press and Public Affairs, Col. Abraham Dorley, said the cards were taken from the alleged perpetrators across the country, the Heritage newspaper reads.

WFP Regional Director Meets Top UNMIL Gov’t Officials

The FrontPage Africa newspaper World Food Program (WFP's) Regional Director for Central and West Africa, Mr. Abdou Dieng, on a four-day visit to Liberia, Monday held bilateral discussions with two senior officials of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). Mr. Dieng met with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Farid Zarif, and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General (DSRSG)/UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Yacoub El Hillo, at UN HQ in Monrovia. Abdou Dieng lauded UNMIL for their collaboration with WFP and support to the country. The FrontPage Africa reports that discussions centered on the ongoing UNMIL drawdown and the capacity of the UN agencies in Liberia to continue to collectively support the Government and people of Liberia after the drawdown of UNMIL.

Police Chief Urges Rule Of Law During 2017 Elections

Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman has cautioned citizens of Bong, Lofa and Nimba counties to uphold the rule of law during the October elections, noting that the exercise is important to the future of the country. He said the “YES TO PEACE, NO TO VIOLENCE” initiative undertaken by the police is intended to build the confidence of the public in the Liberia National Police. He called on the citizens to support the initiative being promoted by the three counties to report any form of police misconduct that they may experience while interacting with officers assigned in their respective counties, the Heritage, the newspaper reads.

ECOWAS Women Rebrand Group, Prepare for Cultural Week

The founder of ECOWAS Women in Liberia, Chinyere Nwaudike, has called on all women and members of the organization to form part of the rebranding process of the organization to sustain national peace and unity among ECOWAS women in the country. Ms. Nwabudike wants members to unite and put aside differences among them, so that together they can revamp and resuscitate the organization which, according to her, “has been dormant for some years as the result of dissatisfaction among the women”. ECOWAS WOMEN in Liberia is a civil society organization which consists of women from the 15 ECOWAS Women in Liberia desire, the Heritage newspaper reads.

W.H.O. Donates Medical Books To Tubman University

The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) has presented several medical books for the use by students enrolled in the College of Health Science at the William V.S. Tubman University in Harper City, Maryland County. Making the formal presentation recently, W.H.O. Maryland County Representative Rachel Jallah, said, the donation is as a result of the university’s impact in the health sector of Liberia. Madam Jallah said Tubman University is working in line to building a resilience health system and greatly contributing to the country’s reconstruction relative to health. She said the books are intended to enhance the university’s good work in the southeast of Liberia and her institution (W.H.O.) is of the strong conviction that the TU will produce health workers that will improve the county’s health system, reads the New Dawn newspaper.

Media Executive Cautions BCSL Students

Media executive Alvin Jask has cautioned the faculty and students of the Brilliant Communications and Leadership School (BCLS) to cultivate the spirit of innovation at their respective places of work in the country. Mr. Jask made the call over the weekend at an induction ceremony of the BCLS student government at the school’s main campus on SKD Boulevard in Monrovia. Mr. Jask works in the Liberia Broadcasting System’s (LBS) Television Department as a Special Producer and also as a Media Consultant at the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC). Jask cautioned the BCLS students and faculty not to despair if anyone of them becomes disabled while pursuing their careers. According to the Daily Observer, Mr. Jask, who is visually impaired, told the students that being a visually impaired person “does not deprive you of overcoming any difficulties.”

Law Students Participate In Moot Court Competition

Three students from the Louis Arthur Grimes School Law at the University of Liberia (UL) have left the country for South Africa to participate in the notable World Trade Organization International Moot Court Competition currently taking place on the campus of Rhodes University, Grahams town, South Africa. According to the Daily Observer, Joseph Fayia, Stephen Lavala and James Jleteh will represent the law school while Counselor Finley Y. Karngar, an instructor, will serve as the students’ coach during the competition. The students’ selection, according to a press release from the UL, followed a rigorous competitive process.  The competition includes written submissions and oral arguments. The Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law has since submitted its written submission for the competition. The daily says the competition is expected to bring more than 30 universities in Africa to participate in oral presentations on fundamental legal concepts of business and development law.

Garraway Community Gets US$45,000 Nurses’ Quarter

The New Dawnnewspaper reports that Grand Kru County Senator Peter Coleman has dedicated a three-bedroom modern nurses quarter in Garraway community, Grand Kru. The project was funded by the Foundation for the Empowerment of Rural Dwellers or FERD. FERD is a non-governmental, non-for-profit, non-religious and non-political organization organized by Liberian professionals several years ago with the aim of improving lives rural dwellers, particularly in the southeastern region.  According to Senator Coleman, the facility is in fulfillment of his campaign promises to the citizens of Garraway. The Grand Kru County legislative caucus chairperson said he remains committed to improving the living conditions of health workers within the county. Speaking in an interview with this paper in Grand Kru County recently, Senator Coleman, a former Minister of Health, disclosed that as part of his ongoing legislative projects, he is currently erecting a modern teacher’s quarter in Dweken,Women Center in Nemyan, and a clinic in Doeswen, among others.
