African Commission on Human Rights Delegation Arrives

A delegation of the African Commission on Human and Peopleís Rights is expected to undertake a promotional mission to Liberia from September 8-12, 2008.

The delegation will be headed by Hon.  Justice Sanji Monageng, Chairperson of the African Commission with oversight responsibility for Human Rights Promotion in Liberia.

The Mission will be joined by two other Commissioners of the ACHPR, including Mumba Malila, member of the African Commission and the Commissionís Special Reporteur on Prisons and Condition of Detention in Africa, Commissioner Catharine Dupe Atoki, member of the African Mission and the Commissionís Chairperson of the Working Group on the Robben Island Guidelines for the Prohibition and Prevention of Torture. They will be accompanied to Liberia by three legal officers from the Secretariat of the African Commission.
While in the country, the Commissioners will hold meetings with senior officials of the Liberian Government, local and international human rights organizations, and later pay a courtesy call on Her Excellency, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

The Mission will be preceded by a workshop on human rights scheduled for September 5-6, 2008 at the Cape Hotel in Monrovia, to be attended by prison and police officers, lawyers, judges, magistrates and other law enforcement officials in the country.
