Regional Government of Madrid Donates Two Fire Trucks to Liberia

The Regional Government of Madrid, Spain has donated two fire trucks and four fire retardant uniforms including hats and boots to the Liberian Government. The donation was made through the Liberian Embassy accredited to the Republic of France with multiple accreditations to Spain, Switzerland, Greece and Portugal.

 According to a dispatch from the Liberian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France,  Mckinely Thomas, the donation is in fulfilment of promises made by the President of the Madrid Community Regional Government, Madam Aguirre Efperanza to Her Excellency, President Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf, during the Liberian leaderís  visit to Spain in 2007.

      The two fire trucks from the Madrid Regional Government fleet to the Government of Liberia include one Mercedes Benz with a capacity to take about 1,500 litres of water and two- fire-fighters onboard plus a driver while the other is a Land Rover Defender 130 with a capacity of about 500 litres of water plus four fire-fighters and  a driver.

     The official turning over ceremony took place in July this year in Madrid, Spain with the Liberian Ambassador to Spain, who is based in Paris, France, His Excellency Thomas, representing the Government of Liberia while Mr. Alejandro Halffter Gallego represented the President of the Madrid Regional Government, Ms Efperanza at the official ceremony.

      During the ceremony, Mr. Gallego conveyed best wishes for the success and prosperity of the Government and people of Liberia, under the leadership of the first elected female President in Africa, Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. He added that President Johnson-Sirleaf is being greatly admired in Spain and respected worldwide, noting, the donation signifies the beginning of a closer cooperation between the Madrid Regional Government and Liberia.

   Also speaking, Ambassador Thomas expressed heartfelt appreciations of the President, Government and people of Liberia to the people of Madrid and described the gifts as a significant gesture which he said would help to save lives and property.

         Ambassador Thomas reminded the Madrid Community and Regional Government that the donation  demonstrates care and friendship for the Liberian People which   would go a long way to strengthening the warm  and cordial ties of friendship and bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Ambassador Thomas further called for a close cooperation between the Madrid Fire Department and the Liberian Fire Service in the areas of training and capacity building.

     Responding, the Madrid Community Fire Department offered to train two Liberian fire service personnel in Madrid. Meanwhile, the fire trucks are expected to arrive in Monrovia by mid August this year. Reports: Public Affairs Bureau/MFA
