Joint Liberia, Nigeria Chamber of Commerce to be Established

The Governments of the Republic of Liberia and the Federal Republic of Nigeria have agreed to set up a Technical Expert Committee to reactivate the moribund bilateral Agreement on Cooperation signed in 1987, with a view to holding a ministerial meeting between Liberia and Nigeria in April 2010 in Abuja that would lead to the establishment of a Joint Commission.

It was also agreed that a Joint Liberia/Nigeria Chamber of Commerce would be established by the two countries, while both sides also agreed to involve members of their respective Parliaments to facilitate speedy ratification of agreements.

According to a Press Communiqué issued in Monrovia last Thursday at the end of the Official visit of the high-powered Nigerian Government delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Chief Ojo Maduekwe, both Liberia and Nigeria also proposed the establishment of a Parliamentary Friendship Association between the two countries to cement closer ties and cooperation.

The Nigerian Foreign Minister proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on collaboration between the Foreign Service Institute of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Foreign Service Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Liberia. This Memorandum would be signed upon the return visit of Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Mrs. Olubanke King-Akerele to Nigeria.

Minister King-Akerele expressed deep appreciation to Minister Maduekwe and the Government and people of Nigeria for their continued support and introduced a Working Framework Proposal towards strengthening collaboration in political, economic and social matters.

During Bilateral Discussions which followed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Maduekwe and his delegation held extensive talks with his Liberian counterpart, King Akerele, Minister of Foreign Affairs and with the Ministers of Education, Commerce and Industry, the Deputy Ministers of Defense and Health and Social Welfare and the Chief of Army Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia.
