Thursday Is National Unification Day

The President of the Republic of Liberia, Her Excellency Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has issued a proclamation declaring, Thursday, May 14, 2009, as National Unification Day,and is to be observed throughout the Territorial Confines of the Republic as a National Holiday.

The Proclamation is in consonance with the Act passed in 1959/1960 Session by the Legislature declaring the 14th Day of May of Each Year as National Unification Day of the Republic of Liberia.

The Proclamation further states that being mindful of the years of civil strife in the Country and its harmful impact on the people, it is imperative that all Liberians rededicate themselves to the noble ideals enshrined in the Unification Act which promotes unity and brotherhood of all Liberia.

The Government of the Republic of Liberia adheres to the principles of justice, equality, fairplay and equal opportunities for all, regards of tribe or clan, section, creed or economic status, so that Liberians might be united in a consolidated whole.

Meanwhile, President Johnson-Sirleaf has directed and ordered that all citizens and foreign residents within the territorial Confines to observe the day, from Six O clock Ante Meridian to Six Oclock Post Meridian, and that all Government offices, Public and Business houses are to be closed during the observance of the Day.
