Saturday Is World Malaria Day ..To Be Observed As Working Holiday Day

The President of the Republic of Liberia , Her Excellency Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has issued a Proclamation, declaring Saturday, April 25, 2009 as “World Malaria Day”, to be observed throughout the Republic as a Working Holiday.

the Day will be observed under the theme: “Counting Malaria Out” with the slogan “Accelerating Malaria Control to Reach the MDGS”.

The observance is in fulfillment of the Resolution adopted by the Heads of State and Government of Africa during its Abuja Summit on April 25, 2000, declaring April 25 each year as “African Malaria Day” which was subsequently changed at its 60th World Health Assembly in March 2007 to “World Malaria Day”.  

Meanwhile, President Johnson-Sirleaf has also ordered the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and other Government Agencies, learning institutions, as well as local and international organizations concerned, to initiate and execute programs to make the occasion very meaningful, by calling the attention of the general public to the danger Malaria poses to the human race.

The Proclamation noted that the commemoration of the day will provide Malaria Endemic Countries and their partners, the opportunity to put extra efforts in comprehensively tracking progress along the way to universal coverage by 2010 and near -zero deaths, by 2015 and the gradual elimination of malaria.
