President Sirleaf declared Firday, April 10, 2009 Fast and Prayer Day

The President of the Republic of Liberia, Her Excellency, Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, has by Proclamation declared Friday, April 10, 2009 as a Day of supplication, fasting and meditation to Almighty God for his bountiful blessings upon the nation, which is to be observed throughout the Republic as a National Holiday.

Proclamation issued by President Johnson-Sirleaf as calling on all residents of Liberia including Prelates, Priests, Elders, Deacons, Evangelists and all people regardless of religious creed to gather together in one accord in their respective places of worship, wearing sack cloths to fast, pray and mediate from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M.

Accordingly, President Sirleaf has further directed that all public offices, business houses and market places remain closed on Friday.

The Proclamation is in consonance with an Act of the National Legislature passed in 1883, which declared the Second Friday in April each year as a National Holiday for the safety and welfare of the Nation and its People with penitent relevance to God.

The Proclamation further noted that at a time in the affairs of men and nations, when peace seems obscure; political, social and economic uncertainties and injustices seem to be the order of the day, while friendship, fraternity, and love among men and nations seem to be relegated and elusive, it is important that Liberians gather in prayers to seek Godís continuous guidance and blessings for the preservation of the State.
