The Government of the Republic Liberia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have signed a Technical and Manpower Assistance Agreement, aimed at deploying over 100 Nigerian Volunteers in various professional fields to effectively participate in the on-going efforts by the Liberian Government to accelerate the socio-economic development of the country.

The signing ceremony marks yet another milestone in the growing cooperation between the two sisterly countries particularly in the critical area of technical manpower assistance.

The signing ceremony took place on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Olubanke King-Akerele, signed on behalf of the Liberian Government while His Excellency Ambassador Bagudu M. Hirse, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, signed for the Nigerian Government.

Speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister King-Akerele expressed deepest gratitude of the Government and people of Liberia to the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the major role played in the search for peace and stability for Liberia and recounted Nigeria numerous assistance and contributions to Liberia, stressing that the people of Liberia will never forget the sisterly responses of the Nigerian Government in times of needs.

According to Minister Akerele, the Agreement represents an urgent response to the huge needs in the Health and Educational sectors which pose serious threat to successful recovery of Liberia.

Also speaking, Ambassador Bagudu M. Hirse, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Nigeria recommitted his governmentís support to Liberiaís reconstruction and development, stressing that the friendly ties that have long existed between Nigeria and Liberia since the establishment of diplomatic relations have continued to grow from strength to strength.

Recounting the sacrifice made by Nigeria to assist Liberia out of its dark days, Minister Hirse the Agreement is a clear testimony of Nigeria commitment to build a mutual beneficial and sustainable relation between the two sisterly countries.
